The family is often described as a child's first school. Long before formal schooling begins, family members establish the rhythms of daily life and the meanings of key ideas.

According to Mayor Ballard, the family is the original social institution from which all other social institutions developed. It is the oldest school in human society. No other social institution is as intimate as the family. Every member of the family is deeply attached to his or her own children.

  • Providing Physical Security: An important function of the family is to provide physical security to its members. After being born, a child finds shelter in a family.   • Meeting Biological Needs: Another important function is meeting the various biological needs of its members, including nutritious food, rest, and activity, and establishing marital relationships for young people.
  • Helping with Socialization: The child's socialization begins in the family through interaction with other members.The child's socialization begins in the family. The child gradually grows up within the family and participates in interactions with other family members. As a result, over time, his socialization begins within the family.
  • Assisting in Productive Activities: Families produce or purchase goods needed for survival. Lack of resources can strain relationships.To survive in society, family members need various types of consumer goods. In some cases, disputes arise between different members of the family. For this reason, the family should allocate the necessary property. Maintenance and its proper distribution among the members are necessary.
  • Maintaining Intimacy: Strong bonds between members lead to a happier family life.It is necessary to maintain a relationship of sincere affection and love between family members.The more sincere the bond between each member of a family, the happier that family will be.

Educational Functions of the Family

  • Social Behavior Education: Families teach children various types of appropriate social behaviors through daily interaction. Children do not come into the world knowing behaviors. Over time, children learn different behaviors through interaction within the family.
  • Cultural Education: Cultural consciousness is developed through family traditions.The family helps in the development of the child's cultural consciousness. The family develops social and cultural qualities in the child. As a result, a healthy sense of culture is awakened in the child.
  • Formation of Good Habits:The family teaches the child to develop various types of good habits. Later on those good habits help the child to become a good citizen
  • Emotional Development: Proper emotional growth and assertive behavior are encouraged.The family helps the child's emotions develop appropriately. Teaching restrained assertive behavior also helps in the overall development of the child.
  • Education for Knowledge:The family introduces children to various types of knowledge. Education for knowledge therefore actually begins in the family.
  • Tradition Preservation: Families pass on traditions and social customs.The family familiarizes children with social traditions and teaches them to preserve those traditions. If the family does not provide that education, in many cases, children remain ignorant of traditions.
  • Scholarship:The family plays a special role in the education of a child. Even today, in many families, children earn a living by receiving scholarships from their parents.

Limitations of the Family as an Educational Institution

Although the family plays an important role in the education of the child, there are some limitations of the family. Currently, the joint family is almost extinct due to socio-economic reasons. As a result, various limitations have arisen in the educational role of the family. Some of the limitations are mentioned below-
  • Decline in Family Size:Due to the disappearance of the joint family, the size of the family is currently decreasing. In this situation, the members are becoming indifferent to worldliness, sociality, etc. As a result, the family is failing to fulfill its educational duties. Smaller families may neglect broader social responsibilities.
  • Emergence of Parallel Institutions: Schools and organizations now share roles once held solely by families.Earlier, when the joint family system was prevalent, the family was a place where various types of education were provided. Especially vocational education was provided by the family itself. But as a result of the evolution of society, many parallel institutions have been developed alongside the family. There, manners, behavior, manners of speaking, how to say what to whom and how, how to wear clothes, how to dress - everything is being taught. As a result, the all-round development of a child is no longer limited to the family.

Due to financial or other reasons, the light of education has not reached many families in country India and Bangladesh. Even after so many years of independence, the list of illiterates in this country is remarkably long, which has worried the educated society of the state. The problem of illiteracy is a special limitation in the educational work of the family.
  • Versatility of Education: In the era ofthe advancement of science and technology, education is too diverse for families alone to cover all aspects.There has been so much diversity in education that it is not possible for any family to provide so much education to their children. No matter how educated the family is, it cannot provide the child with all kinds of knowledge, experiences or concepts. Therefore, it can be said that the diversity or versatility of education in the modern era is another significant limitation in the educational role of the family. Security Issues:
  • Security Issues: Working parents may leave children in daycare, limiting direct family education.Small families cannot always provide adequate security to the child. In many cases, both the father and mother leave the house to work. For the child's safety, he is admitted to some 'distress'. The child spends most of the day in the crèche.
